Trail wheels are usually distinguished between two categories: either they are heavy and durable or they are light and flexible. That is why finding a light and strong carbon wheel can sometimes be very difficult. You´re in luck, as we´ve made this wheel come true. The Traverse SL Fattie 29 puts all the features you need from a mountain wheel in one pack, and all of its performance is validated. In addition to the lightness, durability and rigidity, another priority of the Traverse SL is its ease of use. First of all, we got rid of the crisp straight-pull spokes and corrosion-prone alloy heads. Next, we have opted for 28 J-shaped spokes, for both the front and rear wheels, which are the same length, which facilitates the search for spare parts in case of need. And lastly, we´ve created a new hub design, with a wider profile and higher flange to contribute to overall stiffness. And what is the name? Traverse SL Fatties may be wide, but with a 30mm inner rim width, they are far from the circumference of a fat bike rim. But let´s talk about the width. You may have noticed that the width of mountain bike rims has ranged from 19 to 23 millimeters for decades, and they should have changed a long time ago. In search of a better wheel design, our engineers began testing 2.3 to 2.5-inch tires on 45-millimeter-wide rims to see what, if any, benefits could be found. It only took a few routes to realize that the wider rims offered a number of advantages, such as the addition of additional tire volume, which better supports the tires in hard corners, greatly improves traction due to capacity. to run lower pressures, and noticeably increases the stiffness of the rim. However, they found that increasing the width has a diminishing return, and after testing everything from 25 to 45mm, they determined that the 30mm inner width is optimal.
