Cateye AMPP 500S and ViZ 150 Bike Light Set: Is It Worth Buying?

A useful bike light set needs more than an impressive brightness figure. Battery life, beam shape and everyday practicality all matter, particularly when your winter commute includes darker stretches of road.

The Cateye AMPP 500S and ViZ 150 light set is available for £48.99 at Tredz, down from the £64.99 reference price listed on Velostrive. That saves £16, approximately 25%, on a rechargeable set combining a 500-lumen front light with a rear light offering up to 150 lumens.

What do you get?

The AMPP 500S offers five modes, side visibility, a low-battery indicator and a large power button. Its FlexTight handlebar bracket fits without tools, while mode memory saves your previous setting.

Cateye’s claimed front-light runtimes are:

Mode Output Claimed runtime
High 500 lumens 1.5 hours
Middle 250 lumens 3 hours
Low 100 lumens 8 hours
Daytime HyperConstant 500/100 lumens 5 hours
Flashing 100 lumens 60 hours

The important distinction is that the longest runtime applies to flashing mode. You will need more frequent charging when using the front light to illuminate the road.

The ViZ 150 rear light provides claimed 300-degree visibility and four modes. Its maximum 150-lumen output is used in Daytime HyperFlash, with a claimed 15-hour runtime. Constant mode produces 20 lumens for around five hours, while standard flashing extends the claimed runtime to 70 hours. Both lights have IPX4 splash resistance.

What does the independent review say?

BikeRadar awarded the set four stars, highlighting the conspicuous rear light and straightforward controls. Its reviewer also found useful peripheral illumination from the front beam.

The reservations concerned the bulky or fiddly brackets and front-light output fading before the battery test finished. Charging cables were not supplied with the reviewed set. These are BikeRadar’s findings, rather than Velostrive’s own testing.

Who is this set best suited to?

On the published specifications, this looks a sensible option for commuting and everyday road riding, particularly where street lighting covers much of your route.

The main limitation is the front light’s claimed 90-minute runtime on high. For longer rides on unlit lanes, consider a light with more sustained output and battery capacity. A flashing-mode endurance figure tells you little about how long a light can illuminate a dark road.

Cateye or the cheaper Proviz Canopus and Vega?

The Proviz Canopus and Vega light set is worth comparing if keeping costs down is your priority. Proviz currently lists it at £29.99, with a 300-lumen front light, an anti-glare lens design and included USB charging leads.

Cateye offers the higher maximum front output, while Proviz provides a cheaper starting point. Beam shape and runtime matter alongside lumens, so the brightness figures alone do not establish which will suit your route better. Compare delivery costs too.

Is the Cateye set worth considering?

For shorter commutes and general road use, the AMPP 500S and ViZ 150 offer a useful combination of front illumination, rear visibility and selectable modes. The front light’s high-mode runtime is the main consideration for riders spending longer on dark roads.
