Illuminated Bicycle Pedals: Are They Legal in the UK?

What LOOK Geo City Vision pedals reveal about light colours, reflectors and cycling after dark

Illuminated bicycle pedals offer an appealing way to stand out on dark commutes. Instead of relying entirely on lights fixed to your handlebars and seatpost, they add illumination to a moving part of the bicycle.

However, visibility and road legality are separate considerations. The colour of the light, the direction it faces and the presence of pedal reflectors all matter.

That distinction came into focus when road.cc awarded the latest LOOK Geo City Vision pedals 7/10, praising their visibility while highlighting a problem with red light showing towards the front. Velostrive has not independently tested these pedals.

Are illuminated bicycle pedals legal?

Illuminated pedals are not automatically prohibited, but their design must comply with the applicable lighting rules.

For England, Scotland and Wales, Regulation 11 of the Road Vehicles Lighting Regulations 1989 generally prohibits a bicycle from being fitted with a lamp capable of showing red light towards the front. Adding a conventional white front light does not resolve that separate colour issue.

There is also an important exception that makes pedal lighting more nuanced than simply saying “white forwards, red backwards”. The regulations expressly permit amber light from a lamp attached to or incorporated in a bicycle pedal to show towards the rear. Amber pedal lights should therefore not automatically be dismissed because they face backwards.

The legislation discussed here covers Great Britain. Northern Ireland has separate regulations, so this should not be treated as a definitive guide to every UK jurisdiction.

Why do the LOOK Geo City Vision pedals raise questions?

LOOK promotes the current Geo City Vision design as offering integrated lighting visible around the bicycle, with four operating modes and removable light modules.

However, road.cc reports that the latest version emits red light, including towards the front. Its review distinguishes this from the earlier version, which used an orange light.

That creates the central concern: a moving pedal light can attract attention while still conflicting with the rule against forward-facing red lamps. Buyers should check the exact generation and lighting specification rather than assuming every Geo City Vision model is identical.

You can view the LOOK Geo City Vision pedals on Velostrive, but we would recommend clarifying the light colour and road-use compliance before purchasing them for commuting.

How do different pedal visibility options compare?

Approach What it offers What to check
Red illuminated pedals Moving illumination around the feet A design capable of showing red forwards raises a legal concern
Amber illuminated pedals Moving light without relying on red LEDs Amber pedal lamps have a specific legal allowance, but other requirements still apply
Automatic white/red pedals Lights change colour according to orientation Confirm white stays forwards and red stays rearwards
Amber pedal reflectors Reflect vehicle headlights without batteries Use suitable reflectors facing forwards and backwards on each pedal
Reflective ankle bands Additional reflective movement They do not replace required pedal reflectors

Redshift Arclight illustrates the automatic approach. Its manufacturer says orientation sensors switch the LEDs so white faces forwards and red faces backwards. This addresses the colour-direction problem, but does not by itself establish that a bicycle’s complete lighting and reflector setup complies with the law.

Do pedal lights replace pedal reflectors?

No. Lights and reflectors perform different functions.

Highway Code Rule 60 requires white front and red rear lights at night, together with a red rear reflector. It also specifies amber pedal reflectors for bicycles manufactured after 1 October 1985.

Government guidance explains that the pedal reflectors should face forwards and backwards on each pedal. Rechargeable LEDs are not a substitute for these reflectors, even if they appear brighter.

This is particularly relevant when replacing ordinary flat pedals with specialist designs. Check whether suitable reflectors are included or can be fitted securely.

What should you prioritise for winter commuting?

Start with the required lights and reflectors, then consider additional visibility equipment.

For roads without street lighting, the Highway Code recommends a steady front lamp. Reflective clothing and accessories can also help other road users see you in darkness.

For equipment ideas, see the Cateye AMPP 500S and ViZ 150 light set and the Proviz Canopus and Vega front and rear light set. Check the specifications, mounting position and compliance information for whichever lights you choose.

Clothing offers another complementary option. Our Proviz REFLECT360 Switch Cycling Jacket guide explains its reversible design and reflective fabric. Reflective material works by returning external light towards its source, so it complements your bicycle lights.

Are illuminated pedals worth considering?

They can be an interesting addition for commuters, but check the details before buying. Ask what colour they emit, which directions that light reaches and whether the pedals retain the required reflectors.

For the latest LOOK Geo City Vision pedals, the reported forward-facing red illumination is a substantial reason for caution. A strong review score should not be treated as confirmation of road legality.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use illuminated pedals instead of normal bike lights?

Treat pedal lights as supplementary equipment. Keep the required front and rear lights and reflectors specified in official guidance.

Are amber pedal lights illegal because they shine backwards?

No, not automatically. The regulations contain a specific exception allowing amber light from lamps attached to or incorporated in bicycle pedals to show rearwards.

Do reflective ankle bands replace pedal reflectors?

No. They are useful additional visibility accessories, but they do not fulfil the requirement for reflectors fitted to the pedals.
