Cycling in Murcia: Routes, Climbs, Hotels and Holiday Guide

Ride beyond Spain’s busier cycling hotspots and discover Murcia’s mountain climbs, quiet country roads, coastal views and wonderfully reliable sunshine.

Cycling in Murcia: Spain’s Underrated Cycling Escape

Murcia may not attract the same cycling crowds as Majorca or the Costa Blanca, but that is precisely part of its appeal. This sun-soaked corner of south-eastern Spain combines quiet country roads, challenging mountain climbs, coastal scenery and year-round riding potential, making it a rewarding destination for cyclists who enjoy exploring somewhere different.

The landscape changes quickly once you leave Murcia city. Orchard-lined lanes lead into dry, rolling countryside, while the mountains of Sierra Espuña provide longer ascents, sweeping descents and pine-covered scenery. Head towards the coast and you can build rides around the Mar Menor, Cartagena, Mazarrón and the Costa Cálida, with cafés, sea views and flatter terrain providing a more relaxed alternative to the inland climbs.

Murcia works particularly well for mixed-ability cycling groups. Strong riders can chase elevation in the regional parks, while leisure cyclists can enjoy greenways, riverside paths and gentler roads through the Huerta de Murcia. Gravel and mountain bike riders are well served too, with forest tracks, old railway routes and purpose-built adventures such as the Espubike circuit through Sierra Espuña.

There is also a practical advantage for British cyclists. Murcia has its own international airport, bike hire is available across the region and there is a broad choice of coastal resorts, rural accommodation and cycling-friendly hotels. Choose the right base and you can combine serious riding with good food, sunshine and plenty of recovery time beside the pool.

Why Choose Murcia for a Cycling Holiday?

Murcia offers the kind of variety that makes every day on the bike feel different. One morning can be spent spinning through citrus groves and small farming communities, while the next may involve a sustained climb into the cool pine forests of Sierra Espuña.

Quiet Roads and Varied Terrain

Outside the main urban areas, Murcia has an extensive network of quieter roads connecting traditional towns, agricultural valleys and mountain villages. Routes can be tailored for gentle café rides, rolling endurance days or demanding climbing sessions.

Sierra Espuña Climbs

Sierra Espuña Regional Park is the headline destination for road cyclists and mountain bikers. Climbs from Alhama de Murcia, Totana, Aledo and Mula lead into a dramatically different landscape of forest, limestone and high viewpoints.

The official Espuroad South Route, for example, covers approximately 82 km and includes more than 1,600 metres of climbing, demonstrating how demanding the region’s road cycling can become.

Road, Gravel and Mountain Biking

Murcia is not limited to road cycling. Gravel tracks and natural trails cross the region, while converted railway greenways provide more accessible off-road adventures. The Espubike route showcases Sierra Espuña as a multi-day mountain bike destination, with route information, luggage services and support available locally.

A Climate Made for Cycling

With abundant sunshine, low rainfall and mild conditions through much of the year, Murcia is particularly appealing for a spring, autumn or winter cycling break. It can offer British cyclists a welcome escape from wet roads and dark training days at home.

Excellent Value and Fewer Crowds

Murcia generally feels less saturated with cycling tourism than Spain’s best-known training destinations. That can mean quieter routes, relaxed cafés and competitive hotel prices, particularly outside the busiest summer holiday periods.

When Is the Best Time to Cycle in Murcia?

March to June and September to November are normally the most attractive periods for a Murcia cycling holiday. These months combine useful daylight hours with temperatures that are generally more comfortable for longer rides and sustained climbing.

Spring: March to May

Spring is arguably Murcia’s strongest cycling season. The countryside is greener, daytime conditions are usually pleasant and the mountains are more comfortable than during midsummer. It is an excellent period for road cycling camps, longer routes and mixed cycling holidays.

Early Summer: June

June can still work well, particularly if you start early and choose routes with shaded or higher sections. Temperatures rise quickly, so carry more water than you expect to need and avoid committing to exposed climbs during the hottest part of the afternoon.

High Summer: July and August

July and August can be extremely hot, especially inland. Recreational coastal rides may still be possible around sunrise, but these months are less suitable for strenuous climbing or all-day cycling. Heat management must take priority over distance or speed.

Autumn: September to November

Autumn brings another excellent cycling window. September can remain hot, but conditions often become increasingly comfortable through October and November. The sea also retains some warmth, making this a good time to combine cycling with a coastal holiday.

Winter: December to February

Winter is generally mild compared with the UK and can suit base training or short cycling escapes. Conditions are cooler at altitude, however, so pack arm warmers, a windproof layer and a lightweight rain jacket.

Essential Tips for Cycling in Murcia

  • Start early: Early departures provide cooler temperatures, quieter roads and more time to deal with unexpected route changes.
  • Carry enough water: Services can be limited on inland and mountain routes. Take two bottles and identify refill stops before setting out.
  • Prepare for long climbs: Compact gearing or a wide-range cassette will make Sierra Espuña considerably more enjoyable.
  • Download your route: Save the GPX file to your cycling computer or phone, as mobile reception may be inconsistent in remote areas.
  • Pack for temperature changes: Warm sunshine in the valleys can give way to cooler, windier conditions at altitude.
  • Check your brakes: Murcia’s mountain descents can be long, fast and technical. Inspect pads, rotors and tyres before travelling.
  • Watch the road surface: Rural roads may include rough edges, loose gravel or occasional agricultural traffic.
  • Use daytime lights: Front and rear lights can improve visibility on shaded roads, tunnels and busier approaches to towns.
  • Respect the heat: During warmer months, avoid hard climbing around midday and use sun cream even when conditions feel breezy.
  • Choose your base carefully: Stay near Sierra Espuña for climbing and mountain biking, Murcia city for urban access, or the Costa Cálida for coastal riding and holiday facilities.

Getting to Murcia from the UK

Región de Murcia International Airport is the most convenient arrival point for Murcia city, the Mar Menor and many Costa Cálida resorts. The airport is approximately 25 km from central Murcia, with the journey usually taking around 20 to 30 minutes by car.

Flight schedules from the UK can vary by season and departure airport, so Alicante Airport is a useful alternative. Alicante has a wider choice of routes and is approximately an hour’s drive from Murcia city, depending on traffic and your final destination.

Travelling with Your Bike

If you bring your own bike, check the airline’s current sports-equipment policy before booking. Use a suitable bike box, protect the derailleur and brake rotors, and keep tools within the airline’s baggage rules.

A hire car offers the most flexibility if you plan to ride in several parts of the region. Confirm that the vehicle can accommodate your bike boxes, particularly when travelling as a group. Private airport transfers may also be available, but bike carriage should be arranged in advance.

Hiring a Bike in Murcia

Road bike hire and delivery services operate across Murcia, Sierra Espuña, Cartagena, Los Alcázares, La Manga and other parts of the region. Hiring locally can remove the cost and inconvenience of flying with a bike, while leaving more room for ordinary holiday luggage.

Velostrive travel tip: Before booking, confirm whether your hotel provides secure bike storage, maintenance facilities, early breakfast, sports laundry and suitable food for longer riding days.
